AKGTC + Breakout: Step 3: Plan a photo route

This post is part of a series that describes the learning journey of combining two great projects that focus on the hamlet of Acadia Valley, AB and the grade 4-5-6 combined class at Warren Peers School. The two intertwining projects will be 1) putting this community on the A Kids Guide to Canada Map AND 2) using our community information to build digital breakout tasks (with BreakoutEDU.com) that we will later share with parents, the school and the community. Follow the whole journey here.

This session started with a review of our list of significant community locations. We added a few more so that each member of the grade 1-2-3 class and the grade 4-5-6 class could have a location to research and specialize in.

We then took a screen shot of a Google Map of Acadia Valley and used it in Google Draw to determine a photo-taking route. We first had to determine which locations closer to the school we would leave for the grade 1-2-3 class (marked on the map in red). With the further away locations, we had to decide on a walking route for this glorious 23 degree November morning that would take us past all of the locations in the most efficient manner (marked on the map in green). We used great disciplinary map language like north, south, east west, and one student was quick to point out that we needed a legend.

Even though this working map isn’t a beautiful masterpiece, the students were in awe of how we could insert the Google Drawing into our Google Doc and click on it to update and edit if from the Google Doc.

And the students are already thinking of ways to turn all parts of this into a great Digital Breakout for their parents and community. Today’s idea is that a map like this could be used for a great directional clue! ↥↧↦ ↤

Skills used in this step:

  • Use a chart in Google Docs
  • Insert a Drawing in Google Docs
  • Google Maps
  • Give cardinal directions
  • Use disciplinary geography language
