For Reluctant Flipgriders

Many of my high school colleagues are excited to try Flipgrid with their students, but often quickly abandon it when their big kids are reluctant to record a video that their classmates might see. Fortunately, once students become accustomed to using Flipgrid, they usually come to see what a handy, time-saving tool it can be.

Until the students come to this realization, there are MANY ways that you can have them record without ever showing their face.

  1. Pixel Mode – This gives students a layer of anonymity, especially if they are insecure about appearance, or “how they look on video”

2. Whiteboard Mode – This mode gives total anonymity, as the student can turn on “Board Mode” (white or black) and create an info slide with text, drawing, or images before they even press RECORD. Even better, after narrating the first section, they can pause the Flipgrid recording, create a next info slide and continue the story!

3. Moderated Settings -This is the most extreme and the most private way of keeping students work private. A teacher must go to the Educator Dashboard and set a Topic to “Moderated”. This would work if many students are saving to the same topic, or if a single student is assigned to a single topic. It is VERY important to note, however, that only a teacher can view a Moderated video; this means that the student who recorded the video will not be able to see the video in the topic either – only the teacher. If a student wished to be able to view their video, they would have to choose the “Download Now” option in the final steps of publishing their video.
